PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper sheets counter capable of shortening the reading time required from the reception of light by an area sensor up to the end of data reading. SOLUTION: The paper sheets counter is provided with a light source 27 for irradiating a paper sheet S1 with light, an area sensor 28 for detecting reflected light from the paper sheet S1, an image forming means 29 for forming an image of the reflected light from the paper sheet S1 only in an image forming area which is a part of the whole detection area of the sensor 28, a temporary storage means for reading out data from the sensor 28 and temporarily storing the read data, and a judging means for judging the image on the basis of the data temporarily stored in the temporary storage means. Since the means 29 forms the image of the reflected light from the paper sheet S1 only in the image forming area which is a part of the whole detection area of the sensor 28, the volume of data read out from the sensor 28 can be reduced.
