Unit comprises a heat exchanger (8) consisting of an enclosure (9) having the form of a cylinder, cone or truncated cone, or a combination of a cylinder and a cone or truncated cone, and surrounded by a cooling jacket (17, 18), and a device (11,20) for creating a helicoidally rotating gas current in at least part of the enclosure (9). The device (11, 20) for creating a helicoidally rotating gas current inputs the gas tangentially into the enclosure (9), and comprises a helicoidal ramp (20) located coaxially, and movable, in the enclosure (9). Device (21, 28) is provided for displacing the ramp (20) in a movement following the axis of the enclosure (9), and particularly for displacing the ramp in rotation around the axis of the enclosure (9). Device (26, 27) is provided for supplying solid particles, such as sand, into the rotating gas current. Device (10, 13) is provided for the collection of solids downstream of the part of the enclosure (9) where the rotating gas current runs. The ramp (20) is surrounded by an internal pipe (22) located in the enclosure (9). One end (23) of the pipe (22) is open in the enclosure (9) at the end of the rotating gas current, and the other end (12) is open to the outside of the enclosure (9). An Independent claim is given for a glass or similar mineral material melting furnace having a heat extractor as outlined above.
