PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively construct a control system for plural multi-function peripheral devices. SOLUTION: Many multi-function peripheral devices 16 are connected to a host 15 via a communication link 17. When a user wants to use a scanner 44, a printer 46, a fax machine 48, etc., which are contained in every device 16, the user sends an alert signal to the host 15 via the link 17. Receiving the alert signal, the host 15 gives a question to the device 16 to make the user input a parameter concerning his/her desired function and instructs the device 16 to carry out a prescribed operation according to the input. The data are processed and stored by the host 15 and accordingly the device 16 is not required to have an expanded memory nor a processor. As a result, the total cost is reduced for a control system of the devices 16.
