PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical waveguide of a waveguide type laser oscillator or waveguide type optical amplifier for high output in single mode. SOLUTION: Related to an optical waveguide where a waveguide is formed on an optical substrate 1, a single mode waveguide 2 wherein, with rate earth element ions or transition metal ions added, ions are excited to caused induced emission light of first wavelength band which is propagated in single mode in both of the thickness and width directions of the waveguide, and a multi-mode waveguide 3 wherein, provided so as to clamp the single mode waveguide 2 from both sides on the optical substrate 1, light 7 of a second wavelength band for excitation is propagation in single mode only in the thickness direction of the waveguide while propagated in multi-mode in the width direction, are provided. |
