PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a luminous type image display device of low external light reflection and high contrast. SOLUTION: A reflection polarization layer 20 which separates the linearly polarized light of incident light, allows the transmission of the light (for example, P wave) of one polarization direction and reflects the light (S wave) of the polarization direction perpendicular thereto is disposed on the outside surface of a glass plate 1 on the display surface side. A polarization light 21, which separates the linearly polarized light of the incident light, allows the transmission of the light of the one polarization direction and absorbs the light of the polarization direction perpendicular thereto, is disposed on the display surface side of the reflection polarization layer 20 in such a manner that the light (here, P wave) of the polarization direction where the light transmits the reflection polarization layer 20 is transmitted. The diffused light entering from the outside is separated to the P wave and the S wave at the time of the transmission through the polarization layer 21. The S wave is absorbed and the P wave is transmitted. Further, the P wave transmits the reflection polarization layer 20 as well and is reflected by a phosphor 8 toward the display side. As a result, the reflection of the external light is reduced to about half the reflection heretofore. The emitted light from the phosphor 8 is nearly completely converted to the P wave which is emitted to the display surface side.
