METHODS, SYSTEMS, AND INSTRUMENTS FOR INSERTING PROSTHETIC IMPLANTS

An inserter (10) includes a frame (12) having a central bore through which a threaded rod (24) is inserted. The threaded rod (24) is inserted into an implant (40) to secure the inserter (10) to the implant (40). A thumbscrew (14) is located along a length of the rod (24) and is used by an operator to thread the rod (24) into the implant (40). A biasing member (30), which preferably comprises a set of spring washers (30), is located between the thumbscrew (14) and a slider (18). A lever (16) on the inserter has a cammed surface which forces the slider (18) toward the thumbscrew (14) when the lever (16) is closed. When the slider (18) moves closer to the thumbscrew (14), the spring washers (30) are compressed and generate opposing forces that are applied to the thumbscrew (14) and slider (18). These opposing forces are transferred to the rod and to the frame (12) of the inserter (10) and produce a resultant force that causes a compressive force to be exerted between the inserter (10) and the implant (40). This resultant force is intended to firmly seat the inserter (10) on the implant (40) and to reduce the possibility that any blows applied to the inserter (10) are diverted to the rod (24) causing the rod (24) to loosen or disengage. Thus, in operation, a surgeon or assistant places the threaded rod (24) within the implant (40) and tightens it with the thumbscrew (14). After the rod (24) has been hand-tightened, the lever (16) is raised so as to generate the resultant force that compresses the inserter (10) upon the implant (40).
