PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an electrochromic device showing improved optical stability. SOLUTION: The optical stability of the electrochromic device is improved by using dihydrophenazines expressed by the formula for the electrochromic device. In the formula, R201 is a 6-10C aryl group, R202 is a 2-12C alkyl, 3-7C cycloalkyl, 2-12C alkenyl or 7-16C aralkyl group, each of R203 and R204 is independently hydrogen, halogen, or a 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, cyano or 6-10C aryl group, each of m and n is independently an integer 1 to 4, or when m or n is >=2, each of R203 and R204 adjacent to each other is independently a divalent -CH=CH-CH=CH- group.
