The anal or vaginal probe (2) has a watertight chamber (5) with displacable sides (12). After introduction a tap (10) is set to connect a pump (9) to the probe and liquid enters the watertight chamber (5) such that the sides (12) are in contact with the muscles. The tap (10) is then set to connect the probe (2) to a transductor (8) and processor which enable muscular responses to be analysed
