PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element capable of realizing fine, high quality emission display, and provide its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The organic EL element has a transparent electrode 12 formed of a transparent electrode material such as ITO or SnO2 on the surface of a transparent substrate 10 such as glass, quartz, or resin, a light emitting layer 16 made of an organic EL material, and back plates 18, 20 made of Al or Li stacked on the light emitting layer 16 and facing the transparent electrode 12. Conductive patterns 14, 15 made of a conductor such as a metal thin film coming in contact with the side edge part of the transparent electrode 12 along the pattern of the transparent electrode 12 are formed on the surface of the transparent substrate 10.
