PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain an inital connecting condition with high reliability without increasing a connection loss of an optical fiber. SOLUTION: This mechanical splice 1 is provided with a base plate 4 having a groove 3 for butting opposed fellow optical fibers 2 each other to be supported and aligned, in position, a lid member 6 having a plane for pressing the optical fibers 2 inserted into the groove 3, and an optical fiber gripping part 7 for sandwiching the plate 4 and the lid member 6 to grip the optical fibers 2. A refractive index conforming agent is applied in the vicinity of a butting position for the fibers 2 to be joined. In this case, a slit 9 for releasing air bubbles existing inside the refractive index conforming agent is formed to be crossed with the groove 3, in the vicinity of the butting position for the fibers 2 at least in one side selected from the plate 4 and the lid member 6.
