PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an induction furnace for heating a material while floating in a vacuum container in which high capacity is realized by coating the outer circumference of an insulating wire with a conductive layer on the power supply lead side and grounding one conductive layer of a pair of power supply leads so that a high voltage can be applied to a coil. SOLUTION: A tubular bottomed crucible 2 is provided with a longitudinally elongated slit 2A and the insulating wire 40 of a coil 16 is wound around the crucible 2. The crucible 2 is contained in a vacuum container 6 along with the coil 16. When the coil 16 is excited from a high frequency power supply 5, eddy current is induced in a material to be heated 3 itself and the material 3 is heated and melted while being levitated by an electromagnetic, force. Since a power supply lead 10 is formed by applying a resistive layer 4D and a conductive layer to the outer circumference of the insulating wire 40 formed by coating a central conductor 4A with an insulating layer 4B and grounding one conductive layer of a pair of power supply leads 10, a higher voltage can be applied to the coil 16.
