PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inspect, in line, surface defects such as irregularities of low inclination angles, protrusions, etc., produced by the press forming about car body panels with curved surfaces to be inspected. SOLUTION: A surface detect inspecting apparatus comprises an object conveying means 1 for conveying an object, i.e., a car body panel P to be inspected, a wide angle illuminating means 2 capable of irradiating an illuminating light fore and back along an object conveying path at a fixed irradiating angleαon the object, front and back photographing means 3, 4 disposed in front and back of the irradiating means 2 for photographing reflected lights of the illuminating light at a higher photographing angleβthan the irradiating angleα, and inspecting means 5 for extracting surface defects on the object surface based on received light images obtained from the photograph means 3, 4. The inspecting apparatus detects surface defects in line such as irregularities of low inclination angles, protrusions, etc., at a high accuracy.
