PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an electric component mounting apparatus and method that can avoid as much as possible reduction of efficiency of the electric component mounting work, if a fault occurs in suction nozzles. SOLUTION: A nozzle failure detecting sensor 396 is provided at the nozzle failure detecting position, that is one of a plurality of the stoppage positions of suction nozzles 90. The nozzle failure detecting sensor 396 is a transparent type photoelectric sensor, which includes a light-projecting section 406 and a light-receiving section 408 to detect bending and folding of attracting pipe 134 through comparison of receiving amount of light of the light-receiving section 408 with the threshold. If the suction pipe 134 is folded or bent at many positions, and if it is necessary to replace the defective nozzle before the suction of the next electrical component 92, a series of electrical component mounting work is discontinued for automatic replacement with a good nozzle held in the nozzle accommodating apparatus. It is also possible to detect nozzle failures by imaging the suction pipe with the line sensor and the surface image pickup apparatus. |
