PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate data transfer of image information or the like and to increase a transfer speed of the data by providing a scanner side light transmis sion reception section to a hand scanner and a main body side optical transmis sion reception section to a prescribed position of a main body casing opposed to the scanner side light transmission reception section. SOLUTION: A user uses a hand scanner 2 to read an original to be read and extracts a scanner mount tray 8 from a tray insertion port 6. While the hand scanner 2 is placed on the scanner mount tray 8, the scanner mount tray 8 is slightly pressed into the tray insertion port 6 to press the main body side optical transmission reception section 4 into contact with the scanner side infrared ray transmission reception section 5. In this state, a data transmission switch is depressed to transfer image information from the hand scanner 2 to a main body 1. The image information is transferred between the main body side optical transmission reception section 4 and the scanner side infrared ray transmission reception section 5 through transmission reception of an infrared ray according to a communication system regulated by the IrDA standards or the like.
