The exciting light optical system evaluating filter 21 has a transmission spectrum equal to the absorption spectrum of a fluorescent substance contained in the sample and may be inserted at any position on the light path of an exciting light optical system. The power meter 22 is arranged at the position where the sample 1 must be placed. The exciting light emitted from an exciting light source 11 to pass through the exciting light optical system and the exciting light optical system evaluating filter 21 is detected by the power meter 22 to evaluate the exciting light source 11 or the exciting light optical system on the basis of the detection result.
