PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the concentration of carbon monoxide in a gas which contains hydrogen. SOLUTION: A gas which contains hydrogen is supplied, via a hydrogen blower 22, to a sensor part 30 in which a platinum catalyst 32 is attached to a gas flow passage 31. A gas which contains oxygen is introduced via an oxygen blower 26. The temperature of the platinum catalyst 32 is detected by a catalyst temperature sensor 34. The temperature of the gases is detected by a gas temperature sensor 36. Their temperature difference is calculated. Platinum has a characteristic that it adsorbs carbon monoxide according to the concentration of the carbon monoxide under the coexistence of hydrogen, and it changes an oxidation activity with reference to the hydrogen according to the amount of the carbon monoxide. The calculated temperature difference refers to the degree of the oxidation activity with reference to the hydrogen of the platinum catalyst 32. Since the degree of the oxidation activity is based on the concentration of the carbon monoxide, the concentration of the carbon monoxide can be detected on the basis of the calculated temperature difference.
