The U-shaped blood vessel clip has two legs linked by a member with distortion, and rear extensions. A ratchet lock (15,9,10) is at the extensions (7,8) and the connecting member (4) which distorts when the legs (2,3) are pressed together to give the locking action between the extensions and the distorted link. The ratchet lock (9,10,11) has a friction grip between projections and recesses in a positive fit. The clip is of a resorptive plastics material.
