The invention relates to a device for biologically purifying waste water using an activated sludge process. A mobile fixed bed (fluidised bed) is used to establish micro-organisms for increasing the concentration of the bio-mass in the activated sludge tank. The invention also relates to a method for operating the device and the use of a carrier material with a density of 0.8 rho water < rho carrier material < rho water in its micro-organism-enriched state in said method.
