The clamp has an actuator (1) which is actuated like a fluid-operated working cylinder, with a bearing head on its front end. A pivotably mounted clamp arm (2) is connected to an actuator drive unit (24) via a knuckle joint mechanism (18), which can be allowed to move linearly by fluid application via a control valve (37). The clamp device has a position detector (44) that enables detection of the instantaneous pivot position of the clamp arm and a control valve that is actuated depending on the detected pivot position.
