The shaft has an open top with cover. It contains a water meter (34) positioned between a rising feed pipe (32) and a falling outlet pipe (33) of a tube section (31), which extends from the base of the shaft to half its height. The ends of the pipes away from the water meter are each held moveable and water-proof in parallel sleeve fittings. The fittings are connected to a feed channel (23) resp. an outlet channel (24). The water meter and the tube section are vertically moveable within the shaft, to move the closure valve on the feed side from closed into open position. When the closure valve is shut, meter and tube section to drain the tube section.
