The method involves using an induction crucible (2) of electrically conducting material with at least two coils (4,5) enclosing the crucible and arranged one above the other. At the start of the process the graphite crucible is heated and the charge (3) is melted by heat transfer. At the end of the process the charge is itself conductive and is hence heated inductively. An Independent claim is also included for an induction crucible for melting semiconducting materials, electrically non-conducting materials or alloys.
