The breathing appliance has an inhalation pipe (3), and expiration pipe (5) with valve (6), a manometer (8) for measuring airway pressure, and switching circuit (7) for controlling breathing phases. The inhalation pipe contains a control valve (10) with control pressure chamber (15) and discharge duct (19) which can be opened by a valve element (14). A control pressure pipe (16) branches off from the inhalation pipe and is connected to the control pressure chamber. A reversing valve (17) in the control pressure pipe section connects the flow between the control pressure chamber and vent (18).
