A gas reservoir (6a,6b) is formed of a one or two-piece tubular hollow chamber open at the top. The reservoir is sub-divided into a reservoir chamber (6a',6b') and a pressure-compensation chamber (6a'',6b'') by a stopper (9) through which a vertical tube (10) passes, linking the chambers. The gas reservoirs are positioned directly against or are co-formed with the end-plates (4a,4b). The respective half-cells (2a,2b) are linked via passages in the end-plates and openings (7) with the respective reservoirs and their electrolyte content.
