The device has at least two airbags for filling with gas, a controller for triggering them in the event of an accident and at least one gas source (3). Smaller and larger impact zones are covered by the first and second airbags (1,2). The first airbag has a short unfolding length towards the occupant and is triggered independently of the second airbag, esp. earlier. The second airbag at least partly laterally encloses the first when full. The two airbags together form the larger impact zone. An Independent claim is also included for the use of an occupant protection device in a motor vehicle steering wheel.
