The invention relates to a method for detecting the temperature of a component, for example a starting clutch or main clutch in the transmission of a motor vehicle. According to said method the temperature of the component is continuously calculated using a comprehensive, detailed heat-calculation model which takes into account heat-relevant data of the component in question, its environment and other secondary conditions. After calibration the heat-calculation model is reduced to a small number of component-relevant nodal points.
