To sort a mixed paper material into a fraction of mixed paper and a fraction of ink-free paper, the paper mixture is initially ground into fragments of 30-100 mm. The ground paper mixture is wind winnowed into a heavy fraction of mixed paper and a light fraction of ink-free paper. The paper is pref. ground into fragments of 40-90 mm. The fractions are separated by wind winnowing in a ball winnower or a zigzag winnower. The light fraction is passed to a cyclone, for the solid matter to be separated from air. An Independent claim is included for a paper sorting assembly with a grinder (1) to reduce the paper mixture to fragments, followed by a wind winnower (2) to separate the mixture into heavy and light fractions. Preferred Features: The grinder (1) is a hammer mill. A cyclone (3) takes the light fraction for separation into solid matter and air.
