A conditioning liquid is passed to a cartridge (11) to condition a sorbent (13) to which a sample with an analyte is applied. A wash liquid is applied to the cartridge to wash the sorbent. The analyte is eluted by passing an elution liquid to the cartridge. The sorbent conditioning, sample application, sorbent washing and analyte elution are performed in state wherein a cartridge temperature is controlled. An Independent claim is also included for a solid phase extraction instrument.
