PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing a branched polymer or a branched copolymer containing a specific monomer composition localized at a specific site and free from the problems of troublesome polymerization procedure and emission of foul odor. SOLUTION: The production process comprises (A) a step to produce a branched macromonomer by the radical polymerization of a 1st monomer component composed mainly of a monomer containing methacryloyl group and containing a polyfunctional compound in the presence of MSD and a radical polymerization initiator, (B) a step to produce a branched polymer having ethylenically unsaturated group at the terminal by the radical addition-cleavage chain transfer polymerization of a 2nd monomer component composed mainly of a monomer containing methacryloyl group in the presence of the branched macromonomer produced by the step 1 and, as necessary, (C) a step to produce a branched copolymer having ethylenic unsaturated group at the terminal by the radical addition-cleavage chain transfer polymerization of a 3rd monomer component composed mainly of a monomer containing methacryloyl group in the presence of the branched polymer produced by the step 2.
