PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inspect whether the abnormal state in which a binding tool for a saddle stitch book is protruded from the book or not by measuring a clearance between a piece of paper or a signature and the binding tool and judging the binding tool to be defective in the case the clearance is out of the given value. SOLUTION: The light of a projection section 5 is divided into sections shielded by a signature and permeable sections, and the light reaches a light receiving section 6 in a binding tool inspection device. A light clearance X between the shielded portion and the permeable portion appearing face is measured, by which a clearance between the signature and the biding tool is non-contact measured. When the signature is started to be sensed by a sensor just after carrying the binding tool inspection device, the binding tool is started to be inspected by the binding tool inspection device, and when the signature is not sensed by a sensor, the inspection of the binding tool is completed. At that time, a binding tool inspection data is combined together with a signature carrying timing data and a carrying device picked up on a different site, and the signature for which the abnormality is sensed is rejected out of the signatures carried by a signal processor to confirm the generation of abnormality.
