PURPOSE: A method of manufacturing (R)-4-cyano-3-hydroxybutyric acid ester is provided to manufacture it by using a starting material, (S)-3,4-epoxybutyric salt by cyanogenation reaction and esterification so as to have a high yield and excellent optical purity. CONSTITUTION: An intermediate, (R)-4-cyano-3-hydroxybutyric acid salt is manufactured by cyanogenation reaction from (S)-3,4-epoxybutyric acid salt. A (R)-4-cyano-3-hydroxybutyric acid ester is manufactured from the intermediate (R)-4-cyano-3-hydroxybutyric acid salt by esterification. R is linear or branched alkyl functional group or benzyl functional group.
