PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a coating agent for paper, having low stickiness in wetting and excellent sizing effect by formulating a polyvinyl alcohol-based resin with a polyethylene glycol and an ethylene oxide/propylene oxide compound as essential components. SOLUTION: A self-crosslinkable modified polyvinyl alcohol-based resin containing a silyl group in the molecule such as a saponified substance of vinyl acetate/vinyl alkoxysilane copolymer (component A) is formulated with a polyethylene glycol having 600-8,000 number-average molecular weight (component B) and a compound which comprises 40-99 pts.wt. of an ethylene oxide unit and 1-60 pts.wt. of a propylene oxide unit and has >=1,500 number-average molecular weight (component C) as essential components in the ratio of 0.2-30 pts.wt., preferably 0.5-20 pts.wt. of the component B and 0.1-5 pts.wt. of the component C based on 100 pts.wt. of the component A to give a coating agent for paper. A paper substrate is coated with 0.01-10 g/m2 calculated as dried solid content of the coating agent to give a coated paper for printing.
