PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymideimide capable of keeping high elastic modulus even at a high temperature above the glass transition temperature by reacting a diamine with trimellitic anhydride in the presence of a specific solvent, subjecting the product to cyclodehydration and reacting the product with a diisocyanate in the presence of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid. SOLUTION: The objective polymer can be produced by reacting a diamine at least containing the compound of the formula: H2N-R1-NH2 [R1 is a group of formula I; R2 and R3 are each a bivalent organic group; R4 to R7 are each an alkyl or a (substituted) phenol; (n) is 1-50] with trimellitic anhydride in the presence of an aprotic polar solvent such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, subjecting the produced amic acid to cyclodehydration to obtain a diimide dicarboxylic acid and reacting the product with a diisocyanate preferably expressed by the formula: OCN-R8-NCO (R8 is a group of formula II or the like) in the presence of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid such as terephthalic acid. The polymer is useful for varnish, adhesive, etc.
