PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pigment dispersant which can lower the viscosity of a slurry and smoothen the forced transfer of the slurry with a pump, when particulate calcium carbonate used as a pigment for coated paper is produced by a wet crushing method. SOLUTION: This pigment dispersant comprises a polyacrylic acid and/or polymethacylic acid partial metal neutralized salt of the formula [M is hydrogen or a monovalent metal; X is hydrogen or methyl group; (n) is an integer]. Therein, M has a hydrogen:monovalent metal molar ratio of 6:4 to 2:8, and the pH of an aqueous solution is 3-6.5. The polymer has a weight-average mol.wt. of 10,000-50,000.
