PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact ink jet printer having a waste ink-absorbing member which can uniformly absorb a sufficient amount of waste ink well. SOLUTION: A waste ink-absorbing member 45 is set to a bottom part of an entire area where a printing head 33 main scans, that is, over a record area where the printing head records on a transferred paper 46 and a non-record area of one end part of the record area. At the time of non-printing when the paper is not transferred and not recorded, purging discharge for discharge recovery is carried out uniformly over the whole of the main scanning area to the whole waste ink-absorbing member 45 while avoiding supporting ribs 47. At the time of printing when the paper is transferred and recorded, the purging discharge is carried out at a position (a) of the non-record area. A life of the waste ink-absorbing member 45 can be elongated accordingly. |
