PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an unsaturated polyester used for unsaturated polyester resin compositions capable of giving cured products which have heat resistance, water resistance, solvent resistance and mechanical characteristics, especially toughness, and the like, at high levels in a well balanced state, and to provide an unsaturated polyester resin comprises the unsaturated polyester, styrene and the like. SOLUTION: This unsaturated polyester is produced by reacting (A) an alcohol component comprising a polyvalent alcohol containing 2-methyl-1,3- propanediol in an amount of at least 20 mol.% with (B) an acid component comprising (D at least one of anα,β-unsaturated polybasic carboxylic acid and its reactive derivatives and (2) at least one of anα,β-saturated polybasic carboxylic acid, an aromatic polybasic carboxylic acid and their reactive derivatives. The unsaturated polyester resin comprises the unsaturated polyester and a radical-polymerizable monomer.
