PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a surface sizing excellent in mechanical stability, low foaming properties and sizing effect on acidic paper and neutral paper by emulsion polymerizing a hydrophobic monomer or with an anionic monomer in the presence of a specific salt of a water-soluble copolymer. SOLUTION: This surface sizing is prepared from a copolymer obtained by emulsion polymerization of the hydrophobic monomers such as styrene or the like or with the anionic monomers such as (meth)acrylic acid or the like in the presence of the salt of the water-soluble copolymer comprising 35-75 wt.% of the hydrophobic monomers such as styrenes and alkyl (meth)acrylates as the monomer units, 15-55% of the anionic monomer such as the salt of the (meth)acrylic acid or the like in which at least a part exists as a salt and 5-20% of a nonionic N-substituted mono alkyl (meth)acryl amide expressed by formula (R1 is H or methyl, R2 is a 4<=C alkyl). Coated paper is obtained by coating 0.01-1 g/m2 of this sizing on a paper base.
