Method for providing machining tools with a protective coating and associated tool set

Plasma vacuum coating of tools, by depositing a hard layer of unchanged or selectively modified composition at the tool edge to achieve high adhesion or hardness, is new. A process for protective coating of machining tools comprises plasma vacuum deposition of a hard material layer and either (a) leaving the layer composition unchanged in the active edge region relative to that in the other coated regions, when layer adhesion is of primary importance, or (b) selectively modifying the layer composition in the active edge region relative to that in the other coated regions, when layer hardness is of primary importance. An Independent claim is also included for a tool set comprising individual tools coated with hard material layers by variations (a) and (b) of the above process.
