[Also in Group VI] The clarifying of a liquid containing suspended solids by settling out the suspended solids in each of two or more clarifying compartments, withdrawing clarified liquid by overflow from the top of each compartment and withdrawing settled solids from the bottom of each compartment is characterized by so maintaining the feed of the liquid to, and discharge of clarified liquid from, the respective compartments, that all compartments receive incoming liquid in substantially equal quantities and at substantially the same velocity. Liquid fed at 17 to a well 16, Fig. 2, surmounting a multi-tray clarifier 10 consisting of at least two zones A and B is fed in equal quantities to the two zones through the annular region between conduits 27 and 25 and the annular region between conduit 25 and a central column 40 respectively, the cross-sectional areas of these annular regions being selected accordingly. The feed to the conduit 27 may be only half the total input to the clarifier, the remainder passing through ports 28 into the column 40 and being distributed thence from 29 equally between two further zones C, D. All four zones constitute clarifying zones, while only zones B and D, to which mud from zones A and C passes by pipes 55 and 65 respectively, constitute thickening zones. Supernatant liquid from each zone passes to one of four compartments 85, Fig. 4, whence the rate of its discharge to a common chamber 95 may be measured by a graduated U-tube 101, 103 and controlled by a tubular section 84.</p> |
