A display (10) comprises a substrate in the form of an elongated fiber (100). The fiber (100) includes a plurality of light-emitting elements (150) disposed along its length, each having two electrodes (120, 140) between which are applied electrical signals to cause the light-emitting element (150) to emit light. The fiber (100) includes an electrical conductor (120) disposed along its length to serve as a first electrode (120), a layer of light-emissive material (130) disposed thereon, and a plurality of electrical contacts (140) disposed on the light-emissive material (130) to serve as the second electrodes (120) of the light-emitting elements, and are formed in a continuous process wherein a transparent fiber (110) passes through a plurality of processing chambers (410, 420, 430, 440, 450, 460) for receiving the electrical conductor (120), the light-emissive layer (130) and the plurality of electrical contacts (140) thereon. The method of making a fiber (100) comprises providing a length of a fiber (110), forming a first electrode (120) along the fiber, depositing a light-emitting material (130) along the fiber (110) in electrical contact with the first electrode (120), and forming a plurality of second electrodes (140, 142, 144) along the fiber in electrical contact with the light-emitting material.
