The valve assembly for use in high pressure cleaning devices has inlet (2) and outlet (3) chambers which are divided by two separators. The primary separator, which consists of a valve body (5), seal (6) and valve seat (7) ensures in cooperation with an elastic seal (8) that the valve assembly is fluid-tight when this valve is closed. The secondary separator also consists of a valve body (9) and seal (10) on the valve seat. It has no elastic seal and ensures that the valve is not sensitive to load, but is not necessarily fluid-tight. A control device ensures that the primary separator is not closed before the second or opened after it, so that damage to the first separator due to pressure surges, irregular extrusion and erosion are minimised.
