GAS DIFFUSION ELECTRODE AND BRINE ELECTROLYTIC BATH

A gas diffusion cathode suitable for oxygen cathodes or the like in an ion-exchange membrane type brine electrolytic bath, a gas diffusion cathode with a gas chamber and a brine electrolytic bath using it. A gas diffusion electrode supported on a metal frame characterized in that the gas diffusion electrode is joined to the metal frame via a silver member or a silver surface-carrying member, the joining portions being free from liquid- or gas-leakage to thereby eliminate the need of a packing between the gas diffusion electrode and the electrolytic bath frame. At least two openings are provided in the metal frame and a gas diffusion electrode is joined by hot-pressing to each opening via a silver member or a silver surface-carrying member to provide a large gas diffusion electrode. The metal frame so shaped as to permit the gas diffusion electrode to extend forward can reduce the distance between an ion exchange membrane and the metal frame. An electrode pan is joined to the rear side of the metal frame-carrying gas diffusion electrode and a gas chamber is formed between the electrode pan and the rear side to form a liquid-tight gas chamber-carrying gas diffusion electrode, or form an electrolytic bath using this gas chamber-carrying gas diffusion electrode.
