A system and method for implementing active registries in an electronic network comprises one or more source elements (620) that each subscribe for notification from an event manager (414) when either an add-element event or a remove-element event occurs. An active registry (412) generates an element-change event message (614) to the event manager (414) when either an add-element event or a remove-element event occurs. The event manager (414) responsively generates an event notification message (618) to all subscribed source elements (620). The subscribed source elements (620) may then examine the registry (412) and respond appropriately to the add-element event or the remove-element event.
