The invention relates to the catalytic gas phase oxidation of carbon hydrates with improved selectivity. The invention relates especially to the oxidation of toluenes to form benzaldehydes. The aim of the invention is to increase selectivity of the catalyst without changing the structure of the catalyst and by maintaining the activity of said catalyst and by preventing the production of byproducts. According to the inventive method, a tertiary amine is continually metered to the stream of the reactants which are brought into contact with the catalyst. Said tertiary amine permanently blocks Bronsted acid centres of the surface of the oxidation catalyst during the oxidation reaction of the reactants at temperatures of 250 DEG C and higher. The tertiary amine does not react itself during the oxidation reaction.
