PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To give excellent surface corrosion resistance, electromagnetic wave shielding property and weldability to a metallic material by using a treating agent composed of an organic resin, a coupling agent containing a metal selected from Si, Ti, Zr, V and Mo and a conductive material having a specific particle diameter. SOLUTION: The surface treating agent for metal is prepared by incorporating the organic resin, the coupling agent containing the metal selected from Si, Ti, Zr, V and Mo and the conductive material having <=0.1μm particle diameter. The treating agent is applied on the metal surface with the coating weight of 0.2-0.8 g/cm2 in dry per one side surface to form a coating film having about 0.3-1.2μm film thickness in dry. The organic resin is preferably water soluble and a hydroxy-containing epoxide resin, an acid modified epoxide resin and a polymer or a copolymer of a compound having an ethylenically unsaturated bond having a polar group are mentioned. The coupling agent increases the pseudo-cross linking density with the interaction with the organic resin to improve the adhesive property and corrosion resistance of the coating film.
