PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a gas storage material using active carbon that contains a deposited metal, which material is capable of efficiently and simply adsorbing a large amount of natural gas at a low cost even under a low pressure by impregnating active carbon with a solution containing an organometal compound or organometal complex and oxidizing or reducing the impregnated material so as to deposit an elemental metal or metal compound on the surface of the active carbon. SOLUTION: This production process comprises: dissolving, suspending or emulsifying an organometal compound or organometal complex represented by the formula (wherein each of R and R' is an alkyl, alkenyl or aryl group) in a solvent such as methanol; impregnating active carbon with the resulting solution, suspension or emulsion; and oxidizing or reducing the impregnated material to substantially deposit a formed elemental metal or metal compound such as metal oxide or hydroxide on the surface of the active carbon; wherein as the metal to be used, a 2A, 6A, 7A, 8, 1B, 2B, or 3B group metal is preferred; as the active carbon to be used, powdery or granular active carbon or an active carbon formed body, each having a >=750 m2/g BET specific surface area is preferred; and the deposition amount of such a metal is about 0.1-30 wt.%, or in particular preferably about 1-5 wt.% to the weight of active carbon used. |
