In a solid or fluid fuel-fired steam generating installation local heat is applied at selected points in the gas passes by depositing on or near steam generating tubes at the points a catalyst which will operate at a temperature between 250# and 1000‹ C. to aid the completion of combustion of matter which is in the gases emanating from the furnace of the installation and flowing through the passes. The catalyst may be deposited directly on the water or the superheating or the economizer tubes of the installation and in the case of tubes with longitudinally arranged fins with curved surfaces between tube and fin it may be deposited on the curved surfaces. By regulating the combustion in the furnace such that the gases emanating therefrom contain unburnt matter and by providing an excess of oxygen to make catalytic oxidation possible regulation of the temperature at any particular point of the steam circuit may be effected.
