PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a non-asbestos friction material for use in a brake pad, a brake lining, etc., of an automobile, which is excellent in friction coefficient stability and low-frequency noise reduction. SOLUTION: This non-asbestos friction material comprises a fiber component, a binder, and a friction adjusting agent component, wherein calcium oxide and/or calcium hydroxide is used as the adjusting agent at a concn. of 2-7 vol.% of the total components, and a friction adjusting agent which has been subjected to a certain treatment, is used at a concn. of 1-20 vol.% of the total components. The friction adjusting agent comprises a zeolite, an activated clay, an activated alumina, a silica gel, an active carbon, and a sintered porous body. It maintains a clean sliding surface by absorbing gaseous materials and other particles formed at the time of friction from the friction interface, and also by wearing away migratory materials on the friction surface which are formed through the decomposition.
