PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a belt tensioner for constantly retaining damping force independent of the rotational angle of a tensioner arm. SOLUTION: A tensioner arm 30 is swingably attached to the tensioner cup 22 of a fixed part, and a tensioner pulley 40 is rotatably attached to the tensioner arm 30. A ring-shaped damping band 32 is attached to the tensioner arm 30. The damping band 32 is urged at approximately uniform and constant pressure over the whole circumference toward the inner circumferential surface of the tensioner cup 22 by a C-type spring 33. A grease sump groove 32b is arranged in the peripheral surface of the damping band 32 which is in sliding contact with the inner circumferential surface of the tensioner cup 22.
