PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a work detecting apparatus capable of sure individualization to works different in specification. SOLUTION: In an area sensor 102, an aperture part 101 is formed in an operation unit 2, and a sensor penetrates the aperture part 101 and is so arranged that an arbitrary region of a work accommodating part position in the operation unit 2 is made a photo detecting region. A flange 104 is installed in the tip part of a positioning stopper 4. The flange 104 is made stretchable, thereby enabling sure recognition to works 51 having various kinds of specification.
