PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the blushing of a ingnition plug and the adhesion of carbon thereto while suppressing deterioration of fuel consumption performance by forcibly changing over from startification combustion to even combustion according to combustion conditions. SOLUTION: In this engine, stratification combustion is changed over with even combustion according to operation conditions. Stability is sensed in the stratification combustion, and changeover to the even combustion is temporarily and forcibly carried out when the engine stability is deteriorated. Time required for changeover from the stratification combustion to the even combustion due to deterioration of engine stability is learned. According to the learned result, time of forcible even combustion is variably set.
